Ask Us Wednesday NEWI’m a fan of your site and would happily pay the annual fee but I just wanted to get in touch to say I find it super hard logging in, remembering my password all the time and so on. Can you help? CD

Okay. We have written about login issues before so here are the common ones and how to fix them.

1. Your username is probably NOT your email address.
Occasionally we’ll get an email from a List member who can’t log in and tells us they’re using their email address as a username. Nope. Most of you have a username you created when you registered and 99 percent of those usernames are NOT your email addresses. Usernames are set when you register so while you can change your password a million times, it’s not going to help you a jot if you don’t know your username as well. Solution? Email us and we’ll send you your username/password.

2. You’re sick of having to dig out your username/password every time you visit.
We have tried to fix the functionality for the site to ‘remember’ you and while it works for short sessions, you do need to log in again if you’re away from the site for a long time. This is top of our list to fix if we can, or something we’ll be addressing first if we custom-build the site (while it’s served us pretty well, WordPress has its limitations). So our suggestion is to allow your browser to ‘save’ your username/password so it’s always pre-loaded into the login box at the top of the site when you visit and all you have to do is click ‘go’. The other option is to have a password safe like LastPass which that remembers your username/password and loads it in for you.

3. You have no idea where your username/password is and so you never log in (but would like to!).
Search your email program for an email with the subject line: ‘Thanks for registering, [username]!’ (Replacing ‘username’ with your username, or just search on ‘thanks for registering’ and the email, if you’ve filed it somewhere, should come up. That email has your username and password at the bottom. If you deleted that registration email just get in touch with us and we can send you a new email with your username/password.

4. I click on a newsletter link and log in fine, but it takes me on a wild goose chase instead of to the job I clicked on.
We’ve fixed this as of Monday. If you click on a newsletter or social media link and it takes you to the error box saying you need to log in, go to the login bar at the top of the site, enter your username/password and click ‘GO’. You will then be automatically redirected to the link you clicked on.

Any other login issues you’re experiencing? Hit up the comments and we’ll sort them out for you.
