Party time? Not for many freelancers

party timeThere’s nothing quite like hearing friends talk about Friday drinks after work or the Christmas party season to remind you just how solitary writing from home can be.

But before you dial your favourite restaurant and order a table for one under the mistletoe, consider our best blag guide to ‘finding’ a festive knees-up.

1. Start drinking in pubs nearest to newspaper and magazine offices at every given opportunity for the next few days. You’re sure to stumble on at least one good office shindig and potentially land a few commissions.

2. Rummage through your little black book of PRs – especially the ones you’ve wowed with your coverage. Subtly ask about their Christmas party, and in an ever so surprised voice, look through your diary and mention why yes you are free that night.

3. Ask in-house colleagues about their party. If you’ve recently left an office job, you might find you’ll be a welcome addition to the Xmas drinks.

4. Gate-crash Let’s face it, at the end of the night no-one will want to admit they can’t remember your name even if they didn’t know it in the first place.

5. Organise one! Potentially the quickest way to make new friends and influence people such as fellow freelancers by booking your local’s back room. Easy to do by sending a shout-out via our newsletter.

Do you feel a bit left out this time of year? Or do you always have a party to go to?
