I’m guessing at some point you have Googled yourself.
Don’t be shy, we’ve all done a little round of ‘ego surfing’ simply to see what comes up. And actually, the results can be quite surprising and shocking, especially when you consider this might be the first impression you’re giving to potential clients.
Even if we’re too old to have red-eyed shots of us doing shots, it’s amazing to see how many antiquated articles are still out there with your byline on them. Usually in genres or on issues that you’re no longer interested in, giving people the wrong impression.
So next time you’re waiting for the ferry, standing in a queue or swiping left, take a moment to check out what you virtual shingle says about you. (Me, I have a staggering 401,000 results without a Pulitzer or full-time gig in sight! But then I am also in several instances male and of various races.)
To do a little online health check, you should be checking that:
– Your profile is up to date and best highlights the work you are looking to attract
– All the important information including how to get in contact is available
– Your message, branding is consistent across all channels.
While some people may do weekly audits, I prefer a quarterly overview to ensure that potential clients find the right information – and it can mean a better chance of attracting future roles. Because love it or loathe it, how you appear online is something that has to be fed and watered regularly.
The same goes for your social media. There are great analytics these days, so there are no excuses for not knowing which platforms perform well for you (Twitter? Instagram? Your Facebook business page?). These stats can also be a good heads up on where you need to refocus and whether your tone and/or subject matter is resonating with the type of clients you’re trying to attract.
So instead of reading what’s left of the Sunday supplements, go and Google yourself. I bet you’ll be glad you did.
How often do you spruce up your online presence?
Great article Leo. I was advised that it’s good to Google yourself once a month – and this person suggested that the 1st of each month is a good way to remember it.
I’ve been doing that, and found it useful, but frustrating that old stories of mine pop up way before my website (which is just my name – lynnetestoni.com).
A good impetus to get stuck into your SEO for your own brand!
Thanks Lynne, once a month is probably far healthier. Especially if all the teen / showbiz news and features I wrote in my twenties resurface one day.
