Frequently asked questions

Freelancers
What is Rachel's List?
We’re a community for freelance journalists, content writers, copywriters, editors, PRs and other creatives from around Australia. Join our freelancer Gold membership, for access to jobs, a private member FB group, events, perks and more. Or, if you’re seeking the best creative freelancers in Australia, post a free job or gig to tap into our incredible pool of talent.
Who's behind Rachel's List?
The List was founded by freelance journalist, copywriter and content writer Rachel Smith, who now runs it with her small freelance team.
Why do you vet or pre-approve freelancers joining?
We’ve always had a pre-approval process because a) we want to be a community for experienced freelancers and b) it makes hiring super easy. Instead of posting a job and wading through hundreds of unsuitable applicants, you can tap into a top-shelf database of applicants you could potentially hire right away.
Why has Gold membership increased in price?
Freelancing has changed dramatically in the past few years. AI is reshaping how we work, competition is higher and clients expect more than ever. I don’t want Gold to be just a ‘nice community to belong to’. I want it to be genuinely useful for building a sustainable, better-paid freelance career.
That means:
• A stronger focus on high-quality job opportunities
• Practical upskilling (including how to use AI without losing your voice)
• Tools and training to attract higher-paying clients
• Structured support, not just access
The new pricing reflects that shift.
If Gold helps you land one solid project, secure one ongoing client, or avoid one costly mistake this year, it has more than paid for itself.
It’s not for everyone and that’s okay. But if you’re serious about building a sustainable freelance career, Gold membership is built to support that.
Can graduates join Rachel's List?
Yes – we have a Starter membership for early-career writers / freelancers. Apply to join this way.
How do I apply to join as a freelancer?
Fill in this form so we can check out your work history. Once approved, you can stay as a free member and receive job headlines, or opt for monthly Gold membership ($35/month) or annual Gold membership ($295/year). Prices include GST.
I don't need membership but I just saw a job I want!
If you’ve already filled in this form and been approved, you can purchase a Gold key for temporary jobs board access ($49 inc GST). This opens the jobs board for 7 days, enabling you to view and apply for anything during that time. If you decide to upgrade to Annual Gold membership during that time, we’ll deduct the $49 from your membership cost.
Can I get a refund from a purchase I made in the shop?
Because our products are digital downloads that are delivered immediately, we’re unable to offer refunds. However, if you have any questions before purchasing, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
I'm having trouble logging in!
Click the account icon in the top right corner (the little person outline). Enter your email and we’ll send you a magic link to log in.
Not sure which email you used? Contact us and we’ll send you a reminder.
How do I cancel my membership?
Whether you’re on a monthly or annual Gold Membership, you can cancel at any point via your account (click on ‘Account’ in the top right section of the website).
How do I manage my account?
- View and manage your subscriptions.
- Access and download payment receipts.
- Update your personal information such as name, email address and credit card details.
How do I manage my membership?
I don't use FB - should I still become a Gold member?
Many people do, but we believe the ‘gold’ in our membership is the Facebook group. This is where our serious pros hang out – and aside from just getting to know your peers and form those valuable business relationships we all need, it’s a great place to get answers to your questions, sense-check if you’re charging enough for a project, or find out how to handle a particularly tricky situation.
Having said that, you’ll still get a whole lot of value from your Gold Membership, including perks, access to an events calendar and lunch club recordings and 10% discount off masterclasses.
What's the 'buddy' system?
When you join Rachel’s List, you’ll have the option to be matched with a ‘buddy’ – someone who’s either in your niche or has a skill you’re looking to learn. You’ll be introduced to your buddy then left to connect and build the relationship. Once a year, we’ll match you with a new buddy.
What's the Lunch Club Library?
Every month, we have an free one-hour lunchtime session with an expert – these then go into a ‘library’ all Gold members can access anytime. We’ve done sessions on content strategy, quoting, client onboarding, nailing discovery calls, getting to grips with SEO and GEO, LinkedIn tweaks, ghost-writing, doubling your team with AI and many more.
What perks do you have for Gold members?
Right now, Gold members get these perks:
- 20% off an annual Rounded subscription
- 30% off an annual Authory subscription
- 15% off an annual plan of Typedesk
- 15% off the entire range of notebooks at Creator’s Friend
- 10% off any masterclasses in our Toolkit
Plus discounts on web design and accounting services, too!
Job posters
What if no one suitable applies?
This is highly unlikely to happen UNLESS you’re paying very low rates and/or want someone in the office 5 days a week.
Or, if your ad doesn’t ‘match’ – say you want a senior writer but you’re paying mid-level rates. Or you want an entry-level writer, but you expect 2+ years’ experience. An entry level or junior applicant typically won’t have much experience at all so they will see that requirement and not apply. So make the experience level + the requirements + the money match up, and you’ll have much more chance of attracting great people.
If you need a sense check on your ad, please ask us – we know what works and we can sniff out what might make people pause.
Because jobs and gigs posted on Rachel’s List typically attract top freelancers. We’re talking award-winning journalists, B2B writers, SEO copywriters, professional content writers and strategists, highly skilled PRs, experienced editors… and that’s just for starters. This isn’t a generic jobs board; it’s where serious pros hang out.
I don't have time to write a job ad
No worries – that’s our zone of genius. Swing us a few scribbled bullet points or email us and we’ll draft an ad for you that’ll get results.
How to get freelancers applying to my ad?
In our experience, a job ad that gets results has:
- Remote working arrangements
- Decent pay (ie, not paying junior rates for a senior position)
- A realistic job spec / project scope
PS. If you want your ad at the top of the jobs board, grab our featured ad pack, Only Way Is Up ($95*). Or, opt for Time To Shine pack ($295*) for us to write a sales newsletter promoting JUST your ad + company to thousands of freelancers. *Inc GST.
Cost to post a job or gig ad?
Posting a job or gig on Rachel’s List is free – and we’ll promote it on our socials and in our newsletters for 2 weeks.
Want us to highlight JUST your ad in a one-off sales newsletter written by Rachel and sent to thousands of RL members? Buy the Time To Shine pack ($295*). *Inc GST.
Do I need to create an account to post a job?
No. Rachel’s List doesn’t require job posters to create an account or manage a profile.
We’ve designed posting to be quick and lightweight: you submit your opportunity, we review it, and once it’s approved it goes live. We’ll send you confirmation details and any updates you need — there’s no dashboard to log into or account to maintain.
Keeping it account-free means you can post a role without another login, password, or platform to manage.
How do I close a job ad?
Just contact us at hello@rachelslist.com.au. We can help with updates, changes or removing a listing.
How can I avoid flaky freelancers?
This is why Rachel’s List exists. Our members value reliability, deadlines, and quality. Editors, publishers, content managers and businesses of all sizes return to us because they trust the talent.
Why not just use LinkedIn or Fiverr?
Those platforms give you everyone. Rachel’s List gives you the RIGHT people: engaged, skilled Australian freelancers actively looking for work. We’re often told we’re the best site to find freelance writers – and it’ll cost you $0 to try us out.
I've never hired a freelancer before
You don’t need to be an expert. Post your job or gig, let freelancers apply or send a proposal to you, and take it from there. Negotiations, contracts and payments all happen off-platform, directly with your chosen freelancer.
What makes your jobs board different?
Rachel’s List is trusted, community-driven – and run by long-time freelance journalist + copywriter Rachel Smith, who’s been connecting freelancers and job-posters for well over a decade.
I only need junior writers...
We have a pool of newer freelancers through our Starter membership – emerging writers who are actively building experience and looking for opportunities. Simply post your ad using our form and we’ll do the rest. Entry level or junior job ads are also sent to a range of trusted university academics who share your ad directly with their top students.
Do your freelancers use AI?
A large number of our senior Gold members have been training in AI tools for several years. They have cutting-edge skills but more importantly, are adept at blending AI efficiency with human creativity, so there’s zero drop in quality.
I don't have time to reply to all my applicants!
We do feel it’s good practice (and courteous) to reply to everyone who’s taken the time to answer your ad, but if you’re not able to, please get in touch with us and our VA will do this for you.
How can I find out what to pay a freelancer?
Please download our FREE pay rates report – it’s packed with suggested rates for all kinds of creative freelance projects.
I need a volunteer writer. Will you still post my ad?
Sorry, we only post paid work opportunities.
How can I contact the RL team?
