The story of Rachel’s List

Howdy! I’m Rachel.

… and here are four things people often say to me:

  • “Is Rachel’s List anything like Craig’s List?” (Nope, not even close)
  • “Is there a REAL Rachel?” (Yup. Very real, fuelled by tea and a scary colour-coded calendar)
  • “If I join will I instantly get jobs?” (There are no guarantees in life, but we certainly give you the tools and opportunities to make it happen!)
  • “Do you read EVERY job ad?” (I do – and I push back if the pay’s low).

Rachel’s List started in the early 2000s. I was job-sharing on a magazine with two journos and our only communication was scribbled handover notes. Somehow, that led to meeting IRL for yum-cha, and more lunches followed – often, with another freelancer or two tagging along. Soon, I became the keeper of the growing freelancer ‘list’. Editors got wind of it, and began sending me jobs to share. And by the time my little email list became a website in 2012, it had grown from 3 people to 800.

These days, Rachel’s List is a magnet for thousands of freelancers and job-posters. But we’ll happily shuffle up and make space for you, too.

Why choose Rachel’s List instead of other memberships out there?

Firstly, we’re built by writers, for writers – and we do things differently.

Our experienced community is the watercooler you need; famous for its supportive peeps, no-bullshit questions and learning sessions. Pick up #overflowwork when other members are at capacity, get recommended for gigs you never see advertised and build relationships that lead to repeat clients and ongoing work. With Gold membership, you become more visible inside a trusted network of experienced freelancers.

Our fair-priced membership helps freelancers at every stage get a seat at the table – and we’re here to help you build a solid foundation to take you into the future (and feel supported all the way).

Why choose Rachel’s List

Real experiences from our freelancers

This is hands down the best freelance writing jobs board and community I'm a part of. There are a heap load of additional benefits like lunchtime learning sessions, toolkit [resources], masterminds which have helped me upskill (at speed!) when needed. I've had two of my long term clients come from Rachel's List also.

Money well spent. I’ve secured a couple of freelance jobs through the platform and the community is amazing.

I joined Rachel's List a few years ago because I wanted a space where I could connect with other writers/journalists. Joining Rachel's List proved to be a great decision for me and my business. I've met so many experienced and friendly writers and journalists online and in-person. The Masterclasses, podcast and Lunch Clubs are so valuable. There is a wealth of experience in the group and people are so friendly IRL. I'd highly recommend joining this supportive community if you are a freelancer. I'm a member for life!

It’s a lovely community with flexible plans and a great way to connect with other copywriters. I signed up to the Gold Membership and got the first freelance job I applied for!

This is by far the BEST resource for finding freelance work if you’re a writer of any persuasion. And if you’re a business, it’s an excellent way to find quality writers, as they’ve all been vetted before they can see the job board. Newbie writers are also welcomed as there’s a separate list where they can view more entry level roles and earn their chops. Honestly, the amount of writing resources and community I found with Rachel’s List was beyond what I’d ever expected, and it’s clearly a labour of love for all those behind it. If I could give it 6 stars I would!

I recently signed up to Rachel’s List as I was looking for a part-time marketing/social media job. I didn’t need the annual membership but Rachel’s List has another fantastic option for those who want to apply for a one-off position - a temporary Gold key. I applied for a job and GOT IT! Such a great site for writers and marketers for jobs you won't find through the usual channels.

I LOVE this list/group/business/director/whatever you choose to call it. I chronically subscribe and unsubscribe to lists… but this is by far my fave. That I was recommended by a cool friend, and I’ve also landed a couple of really good gigs out of it is just the peanut to my butter.

If you’re a business or editor…

…you may be wondering ‘Hmm, how can *I* use Rachel’s List?’ Short answer: Post a job or gig to reach pre-approved journalists, copywriters, content specialists, editors, PRs and comms people.

It’s easy, takes minutes and costs you $0. Plus, it’s not unusual to get many on-target, brilliant responses within hours. Win-win, right?

Is Rachel’s List worth it for freelancers?

If you want better jobs, better rates, better writer friends and more momentum in your career… then, yes. It’s worth it. Over 550 freelancers think so and for most members, one job, one client referral or one rate increase covers the cost.

So, who’s in the Rachel’s List team?

founder and director

Rachel Smith

Most people call me… Rach, Rachel or Are You The Real Rachel Behind Rachel’s List? My day typically involves… running the show here and freelancing for my own clients. As a freelance journalist and copywriter, I… work on web copy projects, produce content for small businesses and write features for magazines. You can always twist my arm with… a sleep-in. My role at Rachel’s List is… leading the team, making decisions, planning content, helping job-posters, chatting to experts for future Lunch Clubs and masterclasses, and recording episodes of The Content Byte podcast alongside my co-host Lynne Testoni. Get in touch if you need… advice about industry pay rates, help writing your job ad, or want to discuss a collaboration. Reach me on… hello@rachelslist.com.au

Official wing woman

Claire Chow

Most people call me… Claire, CC — or even The Clairifier, because I have a knack for cutting through the noise and bringing clarity to big ideas. My role at Rachel’s List… is the behind the scenes brains-trust. I help shape strategy, spark ideas and quietly make things happen, from Writing Sprints and Lunch Clubs to our annual Christmas event. You might spot me popping up at events in person or online, but most of the time I’m working away in the background. You can always twist my arm with… a matcha latte or kombucha. I know, what a hippie!? When I’m not at Rachel’s List, you can find me… freelancing as a digital marketer for my own clients or wrangling twin teenagers. Most people wouldn’t know… I’m a yoga teacher and facilitate a day retreat every other month in the Blue Mountains. I also studied and worked in film and TV (way back before “content” was even a thing!).

VA + systems legend

Leah Selfe

Most people ask me… if I trademarked the name Selfie – I wish I did but unfortunately that boat has sailed. Imagine the canal living I would’ve had! When I’m not at Rachel’s List, I’m… driving my teenager everywhere as his personal Uber or chasing after Frankie, my sausage dog after he stole yet another sock! Most people wouldn’t know I… was a travel agent for nearly 10 years and worked in the events industry moving large groups of people around the world (up to 5000 at a time). You can always twist my arm with… a good glass of gin and a cheese platter! Get in touch if you… have any general Rachel’s List questions – I’m on hello@rachelslist.com.au
